Over the years, I have come to know the Holidays or Christmas as something that I have always looked forward to the whole year. Best things are anticipated from this special time of the year because of the seemingly never-ending parties here and there, not to mention the gifts we receive that makes me wonder how great of a magic the holidays have. People are at their nicest and kindest. People go out of their ways just to be able to come home on Christmas day, making sure that no one celebrates it alone. Family members who may have not seen each other for almost the whole year are excited for this reuniting time. Delicious food all prepared, Christmas cards are given out with heart-warming messages in it, and even the simplest gifts are enough to make everyone happy and content. But with the widespread of internet usage, everything has been affected.
Yes, even the way we celebrate occasions has changed and that includes celebrating the most wonderful time of the year. Consumerism has been heightened up. Hence, the outbreak of higher standards on views on Christmas gifts, whether or not they are worth having or receiving. The level of content seems to have become hard to achieve as compared to before. Cards aren’t anymore held by bare hands. They are all of a sudden virtually given, eliminating the need to make an actual card and write on them. Unfortunately, it also has diminished the warm and endearing feel it gives. People nowadays are more likely to just go online and have a video chat with families and friends instead of actually taking time and effort to go home and be there physically. The internet has also increased the possibility of getting hired by companies designated in other countries, thus making celebration of Christmas away from families more rampant than ever.
But one thing to take note about this advantage that the internet gives is that, any form of malicious act is greatly possible. There are many password hackers out there who have learned such craft from freely given hacking tips on the net. They can send fraud or prank cards to colleagues and things like these, as we know, are very much irreversible. So while this internet convenience craze is an advantage to us, such possible harm can be counted as a disadvantage to what is rather wonderful way to be connected to people that we love. So it is greatly advisable to be careful because as much as it is convenient for us to use the net instead of actual cards, it is also very much easy for these hackers to mess with us.
Other things have also started being on trend. I have started using online calendars that are already available for people to use in planning their holidays, cancelling the long-been-used way to doing it with an actual organizer. The reason why people choose using it is over the traditional way is because of the fact that they automatically remind us with alarms, even weeks before the actual holiday. This gives me an overview of how much longer I have to wait before the real event. This way, I no longer have to be surprised when times get nearer.
The way I greet people has vastly changed too! Not so long ago, highly charged long distance calls were made as my family’s way to communicate with each other. Now everything is possible with the connection the internet brings by using Skype or Yahoo messenger webcams. Added to that, simple wall posts on Facebook go a long way! It’s free, convenient and wise. All giving us more time to actually celebrate and do more things rather than spend the whole day trying to long make phone calls to everyone!
The internet has also has paved the way to me and the people of my generation to widen my options in choosing gifts. Malls are not anymore the only stores I can visit to grab gifts for the holidays. Online stores are now all over the internet and countless are the list of deals I can choose from. It helps me save money because more often, shipping fees during holidays are given for free if you avail a certain minimum price. Some can even be engraved and personalized, which is very innovative and revolutionary. But it is also in my list of things to consider, in buying online, to be more careful since I know that I am using a credit card to buy. As we use it, we freely give off our passwords and account numbers. These things are very much useful for hackers too. They can use your credit card to buy things for themselves. So I am very watchful of my credits as I shop because people like these can strike anytime. If we are not careful enough, we may already be paying for them excessively!
Buying food for the holidays has also been changed. Considering how busy people are nowadays compared to before, one can make use of online buying in getting food, giving you more time for yourself and really celebrate rather than spend an ample amount of time in the kitchen. The convenience it gives is tremendous and people could not imagine a better way to do it than that. People used to bake their own cakes during Christmas but online buying has practicality and obviously taken over the world. Given the anticipated expenses if one chooses to make her own set of food for the Holidays, it makes it even cheaper to get everything online.
Some of the changes the internet has made on the way we celebrate for the holidays are good, while some have lessen he intimacy or the warm feeling it gives us on such a season. But whatever way we choose to celebrate the holidays, I believe it still is the season to be jolly. So whatever works for me, as long as it doesn’t feel less happy than it used to, I’m good with it. The holidays will forever be the best time of the year for me, no matter what kind of changes take place.
